About Dr Williams

Dr Sean Williams is a Sydney orthopaedic surgeon with a focused interest in the diagnosis and treatment of hip conditions affecting children, younger adults and older adults.

His practice covers a broad range of hip problems, from developmental hip conditions in children and hip preservation procedures for younger adults through to hip replacement surgery for people living with arthritis or other degenerative hip conditions.

Dr Williams takes the time to understand each patient’s symptoms, lifestyle, functional goals and treatment preferences. He aims to provide clear explanations so that patients and their families can make informed decisions about their care.

Where appropriate, treatment may begin with non-surgical options such as physiotherapy, exercise programs, activity modification and other rehabilitation strategies. When surgery is recommended, the treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s diagnosis, anatomy and individual circumstances.

Experience & Qualifications

Dr Williams completed extensive orthopaedic surgical training across regional and metropolitan New South Wales. His training included experience at Royal North Shore Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, as well as regional centres including Canberra, Tweed Heads and Dubbo.

After qualifying as an orthopaedic surgeon with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Williams undertook further subspecialty training in Perth with high-volume hip preservation and hip replacement surgeons.

This additional training included minimally invasive anterior approach hip replacement, complex revision hip replacement, periacetabular osteotomy and hip arthroscopy.

Dr Williams accepts referrals for patients of different ages, including children, adolescents and adults with hip conditions.

Areas of Expertise

Hip Replacement Surgery

Dr Williams provides assessment and surgical care for patients who may require hip replacement surgery due to arthritis, pain, reduced movement or difficulty completing everyday activities.

His areas of expertise include:

  • Anterior approach hip replacement: A hip replacement technique that accesses the joint from the front of the hip.
  • Bikini incision hip replacement: A variation of the anterior approach that uses a curved incision aligned with the groin crease in suitable patients.
  • Posterior approach hip replacement: An established hip replacement approach that may be recommended depending on the patient’s needs.
  • Bilateral hip replacement: Hip replacement surgery involving both hips in appropriately selected patients.
  • Revision hip replacement: Assessment and treatment for patients who may require further surgery following an earlier hip replacement.
  • Hip resurfacing: A surgical option that may be considered for selected patients.

The suitability of any approach depends on the patient’s diagnosis, anatomy, general health and treatment goals. Dr Williams explains the available options during the consultation process. His core website provides detailed information about anterior approach hip replacement and bikini incision hip replacement.

Hip Preservation Surgery

Hip preservation surgery aims to treat certain hip problems while retaining the natural hip joint wherever appropriate.

Dr Williams’ hip preservation interests include:

  • Hip arthroscopy: Keyhole hip surgery that may be used for conditions such as labral tears and hip impingement.
  • Periacetabular osteotomy: A procedure that may be considered for some patients with hip dysplasia.
  • Safe surgical hip dislocation: A technique that may be used for selected hip reconstruction procedures.
  • Gluteal tendon repair: Treatment for certain tendon tears affecting the side of the hip.
  • Hamstring tendon repair: Surgical treatment for selected hamstring tendon injuries.

Paediatric Hip Conditions

Dr Williams has experience in managing hip conditions affecting children and adolescents.

These may include:

  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip: A condition in which the hip joint has not developed normally.
  • Slipped capital femoral epiphysis: A hip condition that can affect adolescents during periods of growth.
  • Perthes disease: A childhood hip condition affecting the blood supply to the head of the thigh bone.
  • Paediatric hip arthritis: Arthritis or inflammatory conditions affecting a child’s hip.
  • Lower limb alignment concerns: Assessment of significant in-toeing, out-toeing or leg-length differences.

Dr Williams runs a regular outpatient clinic at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and undertakes complex paediatric hip surgery through the hospital.

Conditions Treated

Dr Williams assesses and treats a broad range of hip conditions, including:

  • Hip osteoarthritis: Wear and degeneration of the hip joint that may cause pain and reduced mobility.
  • Hip dysplasia: A shallow or abnormally shaped hip socket.
  • Hip labral tears: Damage to the cartilage rim surrounding the hip socket.
  • Femoroacetabular impingement: Abnormal contact between the ball and socket of the hip joint.
  • Painful hip replacement: Ongoing symptoms following previous hip replacement surgery.
  • Gluteal tendon tears: Tendon injuries that can cause pain around the outside of the hip.
  • Hip fractures: Injuries that may require surgical treatment.
  • Hamstring avulsion injuries: Injuries in which the hamstring tendon pulls away from its attachment point.

A Personalised Approach to Treatment

Dr Williams believes that surgery is not always the first or most suitable treatment option.

He works closely with patients, general practitioners, physiotherapists and other allied health practitioners to create a coordinated treatment plan.

This may include active rehabilitation and non-operative care, surgery where appropriate, and a structured recovery program.

Referrals and Appointments

Patients may contact the practice to request an appointment.

General practitioners, physiotherapists and other health practitioners may also contact the practice regarding referrals. Patients seeking a Medicare rebate generally require a valid GP referral.

Regional patients may be able to arrange an initial telehealth consultation where appropriate. An in-person examination may still be required for diagnosis and treatment planning.
